A Contemporary Adaptation of Michel Tremblay’s Les Belles Soeurs by Deirdre Kinahan.

Imagine a million Green Shield Stamps, all won by Ger Lawless. It’s 1974 in Ballymun, where happiness seems within her grasp. However, when 15 friends and family members convene to help her claim the winnings, chaos ensues! In a single fateful night, these determined women invite you into their lives in the uproariously funny production of The Unmanageable Sisters – Deirdre Kinahan’s reimagining of Michel Tremblay’s acclaimed Quebecois comedy, Les Belles-Soeurs.

Michel Tremblay's
work includes 30 plays, 30 novels, 7 collections of autobiographical stories and 1 collection of stories, 7 film or television scripts, 47 translations or adaptations by foreign authors, 10 plays and 15 stories published in various publications, 1 opera libretto, 1 cycle of songs, 1 symphonic performance and 2 musicals as well as the lyrics of about fifteen songs for Pauline Julien, Renée Claude, Monique Leyrac and Ginette Reno. There are also more than 2,400 stagings of his works in nearly 50 countries around the world. Translated into 41 languages, several dramatic works by Michel Tremblay have been acclaimed abroad. His plays have been staged in many cities in Canada and the United States, as well as in Great Britain, France, Belgium, in Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Chile, Democratic Republic of Congo, Finland, Germany, Venezuela, Romania, Japan, Spain, Brazil and in Cuba. All are published in English as well as some in German, Arabic, Italian and Scottish, among others. There are even Yiddish and Moré versions of Sisters-in-law .

Michel Tremblay has received nearly 90 awards during his career, including the prestigious Prince Pierre of Monaco Prize, Gilles-Corbeil Prize from the Émile-Nelligan Foundation and Grand Prix de la Francophonie from the French Academy for his entire work.

 

Deirdre Kinahan

Deirdre Kinahan is an award-winning playwright. She is an elected member of Aosdána, Ireland’s elected organisation of outstanding artists and Literary Associate with Meath County Council Arts Office. Deirdre collaborates with artists and theatres all over the world and has a large canon of regularly produced plays to her credit. She is published by Nick Hern Books.  Best Known Plays include: The Unmanageable Sisters, Rathmines Road, Moment, Halcyon Days, Bogboy, Hue & Cry, Melody, Spinning and her Irish Revolutionary History Trilogy Wild Sky, Embargoand Outrage.

Deirdre works regularly with the Abbey Theatre, Landmark Productions and Fishamble Theatre Company in Dublin but collaborates regularly with theatres in the UK (Bush, Old Vic, Pentabus, Royal Court), Europe (Stat Theatre Mainz, Ateneum Warsaw) and America (Irish Arts Centre, Solas Nua, Manhattan Theatre Club, Steep Theatre, Irish Theatre Chicago).  Recent works include The Saviour for Landmark Productions, In the Middle of the Fields for Solas Nua Washington DC, The Visit for Dublin Theatre Festival, Bloody Yesterday for Glassmask Theatre.

Deirdre has new theatre projects in development with the Abbey Theatre and Landmark Productions and a new opera with Sofft productions. She also has years of experience as a producer and enjoys curating artistic projects and working in documentary, music and short film making.

Victoria Shepherd

Victoria Shepherd  made her Toronto Irish Player debut with The Mai and is thrilled to return with The Unmanageable Sisters. Victoria has directed several productions for the Alumnae Theatre Company’s mainstage (Summer and Smoke; August: Osage County; In The Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), New Ideas Festival (2005, 2007, 2008), Big Ideas (Oedipus Wrecks, Jegger and Malone) Next Stage (In The Chocolate Boxes, Ribbons, A Little Happiness) and its Cyber Reads Series (12 Angry Women, The Vic; Hedda Gabler). Victoria has also helmed productions at the Village Players, Amicus Production, the PLS, the BurlOak Theatre Group and the Toronto Fringe Festival as well as the premiere productions of Chloe Whitehorn’s The Pigeon and Waltzing With Puppets and Andrew Batten’s The Sad Blisters.

Heather feels lucky to be able to take the stage for the first time with Toronto Irish Players, especially with this formidable group of women. Heather was last seen in Burloak Theatre Group's annual pantomime Rapunzel and at the Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays in That Thing with Feathers. When not on stage, she works at a restaurant and dreams of one day being in a Wes Anderson film. Coming from a Scottish background, she's enjoying the challenge of an Irish accent and would like to "tank" her co-worker, Glenn, as well as her Irish co-stars for being such great teachers!

Asha is thrilled to be making her acting debut. She is a huge fan of Irish actress Katie McGrath, who inspired her to finally realize her dreams of acting. Asha is touched by the support she has received from Toronto Irish Players and everyone involved in the play. She thinks the cast is ‘gas craic’! When not at rehearsals, Asha works as a software roboticist and loves playing her guitar, reading, cooking and baking - especially her famous Guinness brownies!

Theresa is excited to be making her Toronto acting debut with the Irish Players this year. She is an actor, musician, and most importantly, a daughter of two Irish parents. Theresa is very proud to be a part of such a wonderful play and has enjoyed every step along the way. She wants to thank her mom for sending her this audition, her family & friends for all their support, the production & rehearsal team, and the Irish Players Company for making this happen!

A high school teacher by day, Renee is an active participant in Toronto community theatre and was last seen as Betty in the TIP production of Chapati. Other recent roles include Margie in Good People and Veronica in God of Carnage. It has been an absolute joy working with such an amazing group of women - Enjoy the show!

Martina, from Zurich, now in Toronto, swiftly builds her stage career. After debuting with Toronto Irish Players in 2022's "The Hen Night Epiphany," Recent feats: Netflix's "Stranger Things: The Experience," her solo show "The Giant Cinderella" across NA, lead in indie film "Invited" (105films), plus national commercials. Grateful for the heart and creativity of the cast and crew, Martina cherishes the laughter, impromptu singing, and teamwork. Barbara a founding member of T.I.P. is delighted to return to the stage in The Unmanageable Sisters with this amazing group of talented women.  A huge thank you goes out to our talented and hard working crew.  Last seen by T.I.P. audiences in 2018 in the award winning  Little Gem by Elaine Murphy and in 2017 in the award winning  Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley.  Barbara appeared with T.I.P. in their first  production Cathleen Ni Houlihan in June 1975. Over the years she has had the pleasure of working with three generations of her family on the T.I.P. stage.  Yes, while The Unmanageable Sisters is set fifty years ago in 1974 T.I.P. will celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2025.  Fifty years filled with hard work, dedication, love, laughter and tears.  We couldn't have done it without you and we look forward to celebrating this amazing milestone with you all.   Enjoy the show these women will make you laugh out loud and shed a tear as they pull on your heartstrings.

Ginger hair notwithstanding, Kim is not Irish and instead sports a nifty mix of north German/Danish and Austro-Slovenian heritage. But after several Irish Zoom plays over the pandemic years, it seemed inevitable that she would take her newfound Irish accent to the stage - this time to play wanton woman Patsy Guerin. Kim has been acting in Toronto shows for 30 years now (since she was a baby 😉), she's a founding member of Cabbagetown Theatre and has a string of directing/producing credits to her name as well.

The last time Tina was onstage in a theatre was in another Toronto Irish Players production: Many Young Men of Twenty by John B. Keane. That happened in February 2020, immediately pre-pandemic.  Since then, a lot of Zoom readings and performances! Previously, she performed in the Irish Players’ “Sudbury tour” (2017) of The Night Joe Dolan’s Car Broke Down, and many moons ago, was directed by Victoria Shepherd in The Mai

Pre-pandemic stage performances for other companies include A.B. Neilly’s The Seer (Toronto Queer Theatre Festival) and The Importance of Being Earnest (for Alumnae Theatre Company).  Favourite stage roles include Mauritius and Enchanted April (Village Players); After Mrs. Rochester and Così (Alumnae); and Jane Eyre (Amicus Productions).

Anne Shepherd is a Toronto actor, psychiatrist, mother to 3 adult sons and 3 cats. She recently completed a film on elder abuse called “Stop It” in Markham. She adores playing creatures, witches and zombies. Last year she played disgruntled witch in “Genieology (Alumnae,) a bereaved wife “Without Whom” (7th Method Productions) and another woman skirting loss in the “The Great Kelleys, (Alumnae). Delighted to be joining the Toronto Irish Players!

Drea always wanted to be Irish, so this show is a bit of a dream come true! She has trained at the National Voice Intensive, New School of Drama, and Equity Showcase Theatre. Favourite roles include Paulina in The Winter’s Tale (Dandelion Theatre), Toinette in The Imaginary Invalid (Whitby Courthouse Theatre), and Breast Woman in indie feature Most Guys Today. An avid swing dancer, Drea also runs a 1950s rock'n'roll dance studio, Black Cat Boogie. Drea loves bright colours, twirly skirts, cats, and ice cream.

Heather is delighted to be joining the Toronto Irish Players for the first time in this big, funny and heart-wrenching play set in one of her favourite places – she recently ambled the cobbled streets in Dublin’s fair city and fell in love!   Heather was last heard and seen in the west end playing the admirable Mina Harker in Dracula: A Radio Play Mini Series with The Oakville Players and earnest Lady Chiltern in An Ideal Husband with Burloak Theatre Group.

Catherine, from West Cork, is so pleased to be back with Toronto Irish Players, last seen in "Nobody's Talking to me".Deirdre Kinahan's "The Unmanageable Sisters" is classic Doyle, with the balance of outrageous humour and abject tragedy. Playing "Dolly" brought me to tears at times with her simple innocence. For those in the audience who are Irish, hearing the Irish National Anthem, as Gaeilge, at the end will make you feel proud of our heritage and our unquenchable spirit.

A graduate of York University's Theatre Production program, David has been stage managing and designing across Canada in one way or another since 2008. Some previous favourite works of his include "Paradise by the River" (Shadowpath Theatre Productions), "Killing Game" (Randolph Academy), and "The Mousetrap" (Lower Ossington Theatre). This is his first show post-pandemic, and his first with the Toronto Irish Players. Besides theatre, his other great passion is travel and exploration, currently being fulfilled by his day job with Intrepid Travel. Among the 41 countries he's traveled to so far, his favourite destinations include South Africa, Rapa Nui, and Antarctica. Unfortunately they wouldn't let him bring a penguin home though. Numbers 42 and 43 are coming up right after we close this show!

Jackie joined TIP in 2017 as ASM for The Night Joe Dolan’s Car Broke Down which was her first introduction to theatre and has been bitten by the bug! She has worked as ASM for The Veil, Little Gem, Dancing at Lughnasa, The Land Grabber, Nobody's Talking to Me, The Hen Night Epiphany, The Seafarer and Brownbread.  This is my first time dipping my toe into the art of Producing. I have enjoyed working alongside a great cast and crew of The Unmanageable Sisters and I hope you the audience enjoy the play and the rollercoaster of emotions that come along with it.

Larry's been working on both sides of the footlights for quite a number of years now. Most of his community theatre career has been with the various groups at Theatre Scarborough. He began back in the late 80's with the Scarborough Players, appearing in such shows as Death Trap and Harvey and most recently A Christmas Carol.  He’s performed with Scarborough Music Theatre in Gypsy and Annie. With the Guild he appeared in Kiss Me, Kate and served as President of Scarborough Theatre Guild for two terms and has directed such shows for them as An O. Henry Christmas, The Glass Menagerie & Picnic.  In his spare time he’s been producing Virtual Concerts for his own company's (Capricorn 9 Productions) YouTube channel.
