George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion is is a sharp, witty, and thought-provoking comedy that explores class, language, and personal identity. The play follows Eliza Doolittle, a poor flower seller whose life is upended when she becomes the subject of a daring social experiment by Professor Henry Higgins, an expert in phonetics. As Eliza is taught to speak and behave like a lady, she challenges the rigid class system of Edwardian England.
Full of humor, memorable characters, and incisive social commentary, Pygmalion questions whether true transformation comes from outward polish or inner self-worth. Entertaining and still strikingly relevant, the play offers both laughter and insight into society’s enduring prejudices.
George Bernard Shaw
Playwright
George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950) was an Irish playwright, critic, and social thinker, widely regarded as one of the greatest dramatists in the English language. A leading figure of modern theatre, Shaw wrote plays that combined sharp wit with serious social criticism, often challenging conventions around class, gender, politics, and morality. His most famous works include Pygmalion, Man and Superman, Saint Joan, and Mrs Warren’s Profession.
Shaw was also a passionate public intellectual, known for his outspoken views on social reform, education, and equality. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 and remains celebrated for his ability to entertain audiences while provoking them to think deeply about society and human behavior.

Anne Armstrong

There she designed and painted sets with her students for many productions including Pirates of Penzance, Damn Yankees, Guys and Dolls, Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof. She also designed and painted sets for Upstart Crow’s production of G. B. Shaw’s Saint Joan. She has shown her artwork in solo and group shows at the AGO, ROM, OISE, Hamilton Civic Centre, Etobicoke Civic Centre, Del Bello Gallery, Merton Gallery, Sage Café, Groaning Board Restaurant, Sovereign House, and Neilson Park Creative Centre. It is always a pleasure and privilege to work with Toronto Irish Players. Thank you especially to the wonderful creative team: Sean, Heather, Bernie, Clodagh, Collette, Catherine, Leslie and all those who dropped in to help. Also thank you to Geraldine for overseeing it all and supporting us. Your delicious and substantial midday meals kept us going and brought us together as a group.
Seán (John) Treacy
Set Designer & Head Carpenter
Seán made the move from Limerick to Canada back in 1974 and has been a fixture with the Players for over two decades. He’s a bit of a "jack of all trades" around the theater; while he started out backstage as an ASM, he eventually tried his hand at sound and set design. His work on sets and visual presentations even picked up a few nods from ACT-CO and Theatre Ontario along the way.
These days, you’ll mostly find him overseeing the heavy lifting—handling the construction and installation of the sets. Once the curtain goes up, he usually migrates to the booth to run the lighting board for the duration of the show.
